ThinkingWorks Course Series
The ThinkingWorks course series is designed to provide teachers with continuous professional development in the area of literacy instruction. We have two courses: Thinking Works for Early and Middle Childhood Teachers and Thinking Works for Teachers of Adolescents. At this time, the courses are delivered in person in the Toledo, Ohio area by our staff and may be taken for credit through the University of Toledo. In the near future, we hope to enable web delivery of the courses.
The courses typically meet for 30 contact hours over the period of a school year, a semester, or a week during the summer. Participants select a number of strategies from the 60 or so presented during class time and implement them in their classrooms. Some class time is devoted to sharing results with other teachers.
Teachers completing Thinking Works courses may earn 2 graduate credits from the University of Toledo. A special 3-credit option qualifies as the content reading course of Ohio's reading endorsement.
ThinkingWorks proves most effective when it is implemented as a building- or district-wide initiative. However, individual teachers and administrators can "open enroll" for courses that we offer in Toledo and at locations in the surrounding area. Also, school districts often find shorter, non-credit-bearing in-services to be helpful.
